The official results of 12th Prix Marulic Festival

The 12th Prix Marulic Radio Festival took place as usual on the island of Hvar, and was attended by 61 delegates who travelled from as far afield as Canada, Australia and Ukraine, - along with many from around Europe and, of course, Croatian Radio. They represented over 30 broadcasting organisations. Most entries were accompanied either by one of the makers of a special programme, or at least by a representative of the company. Over the six days of the Festival, a record 42 entries, (23 placed in the Drama Category and 19 in the Documentary one), were auditioned by the twelve-strong international jury, at pleasant, open-air venues: a garden, a churchyard, Monastery cloisters and up in the Town Fortress. At the end of each day, the merits and demerits of every entry were considered in open discussion. At the end of the last day, the jury marked their ballot papers in two separate, confidential voting rounds
Inevitably the programme quality fluctuated somewhat. However, the general standard and the high production values were rather impressive this year too, with several programmes drawing positive and appreciative comments from the jury and observers. Indeed, several programmes defied and transcended the old strict boundaries of radio genres. This year we had several such "pieces of radio", - free-wheeling, multi-layered, spectacular compositions that drew their strength from techniques of both categories plus acoustical improvisation. With only a few exceptions, most of the programmes fell well within the widely interpreted concept of Prix Marulic creatively and imaginatively.

THE WINNING PROGRAMMES

DRAMA CATEGORY

In the Drama Category, the two Prix Marulic and the Grand Prix Marulic were awarded as follows, -in ascending order:

The Third Prix Marulic was awarded to "Atlantis Tapes", a 45'00 'radio fantasy' entered by Deutschalndfunk. The theme of this programme by Claus Buhlert derived from Francis Bacon's 17th c. imaginary voyage to "Utopia", but was really about two icons of German art who do not have much in common : the writer and dramatist Heiner Muller and the visual artist Joseph Beuys, -- one from the East, the other from the West. It was a multi-layered, word-sound-and-music composition that gained the approbation of the jury,

The Second Prix Marulic was awarded to "Das Nibelungenlied", a one-hour-long drama entered by Sudwestrundfunk, ARD, Germany. It was the first of two parts of a skilfully-structured, vividly-acted adaptation by Beate Andres based on the prose translation by Helmut Brackert of the Middle High German of 'The Song of the Nibelungs' that goes back about eight centuries. The complex mythical plot and larger-than-life characters are, of course, world-famous from the Wagner's operatic cycle 'Der Ring Des Nibelungen'. The legendary hero Siegfried, with his wonderful sword and magic cloak which finally fails to protect him; the desirable Brunhild, with her formidable belt. Mystery, awe, poetry. A broad canvass of love, lust, dreams, ambitions, jealousies and, above all, violence and brutality. In the first part of this powerful dramatisation. violence is described and illustrated from a courtly perspective, prefiguring a society that is becoming increasingly brutalised, even though it still functions. The jury were particularly impressed by the pace, the energy, the clarity of this production, as well as by its effective use of the medium of radio.

The Grand Prix Marulic 2008 was awarded to "Medea Doesn't Have Nightmares", which attained the highest number of points in the Drama Category. This 30'00 radio play was entered by ERT, the Hellenic Radio and Television, Athens, Greece. Written by Kostas Kanavouris, directed by Maro Karayannopoulou, it demonstrated the virtues of classic simplicity. It was based on a true incident. Its language was the everyday colloquial speech of two immigrant women-cleaners, but the setting and the undercurrent of their 'chat' was highly and darkly dramatic. Working in appalling conditions in a home for abandoned children, victims of incurable diseases, they do all they can to care lovingly for their hopeless charges, but again and again they are tragically driven in the end to mercy killing, -- secure also in the knowledge that there has been no investigation in such deaths. The stark surroundings were reflected in the spare, unfussy and effective production. Christina Koutsoudaki and Lyda Dimitriou were pragmatic, fatalistic, compassionate and convincing as the two murderous cleaners who had come to Greece from the same area on the Negru Sea as the 'barbarian' Medea who had killed her own children, albeit for other reasons. This poetic reference served as a link between the past and this haunting present day radio play.

DOCUMENTARY CATEGORY

In the Documentary Category, the two Prix Marulic and the Grand Prix Marulic were awarded as follows, in ascending order:

The Third Prix Marulic was awarded to "The Tenth Muse. A weed in Shakespeare's Garden" by David Zane Mairowitz. The story is told by the South African paleontologist Francis Thackeray who, through his scientific discovery, formulates a new theory about the writing of Shakespeare's sonnets. Thackeray analyses some fragments of clay pipes found under the poet's house in Stratford -upon-Avon, and discovers traces of cannabis and cocaine, no less! Were weeds Shakespeare's Muse?
This investigative programme consists of scientific speculation, African music and extracts from Shakespeare's sonnets read by a female voice, presumably that of his Tenth Muse. Listeners found the daring and refreshing mix of sound material very attractive, and the jury also appreciated the humour of the piece.

The Second Prix Marulic was awarded to "Europe's Craze" by Victoria Thaczyk and Marcus Gammel. The production was entered by Deutschlandradio Kultur. The programme revisits the myth of Zeus transforming himself into a bull in order to capture Europe, the beautiful Phoenician Princess. The ancient story of the Rape of Europe is retold through the voices of European women who work with bulls: Southern German peasants, a French bull breeder, a Spanish torero, an English cattle auctioneer etc. The documentary presents the archaic jobs in the frame of contemporary life. The reporter's exploration of the theme traces the depravation of the beautiful myth over the centuries. The director collected a wealth of recordings : moving statements, extracts from a text from 2nd c. BC, as well as ancient calls and present-day hollers. The rich mix made the programme highly radiogenic.

The Grand Prix Marulic 2008 for the best Documentary was awarded to "The Dublu Life", entered by ABC, Australia, and written and directed by Natalie Kestecher. The feature revisits the Jewish belief in the existence of thirty-six beings - the lamed vav tzaddikim - without whom the world would be much more troubled. The author-observer asks rabbis, mystics and others who these 36 beings are and what we can learn from them. She also finds a photographer who claims to have photographed the 36, and actually describes some of his snapshots. But the author-observer is also engaged in the search of those mysterious beings herself. Her reflections are like mini-poems on the mystery hidden in every one of us. "The Double Life" impressed the jury as a beautifully-made radio feature on an unusual, fascinating subject, which was as informative as it was intriguing and evocative.

Prix Marulić
Old Texts Revisited
International Festival of Radio Plays
and Documentary Radio Dramas
Hvar, Croatia

Is our heritage like a locked room full of abandoned things?
Is it true that we cannot communicate our present experience through the past?

Is our heritage dead?
No, we think it is very much alive.
We think that the radio medium is exceptionally suitable for a contemporary dialogue in the past.

Welcome to our web site. Prix Marulić Festival - Old Texts Revisited is an annual festival dedicated to radio programs based on the world's literary heritage. The Prix Marulić Festival was first held in 1997.

In a historical setting of the ancient town of Hvar, on the island of Hvar full of the Mediterranean colour and fragrance, you will have morning and afternoon listening sessions in the buildings with a long history: in the theatre, in the cloister and refectory of the Franciscan monastery, the town fortress and some other places. In the evening we shall talk about the broadcasts and discuss various aspects of contemporary radio.

Prix Marulić 2008 - Old Texts Revisited is a festival organized by the Drama Department of Croatian Radio in co-operation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The contest is open to all regular and associate members of the EBU, as well as to other broadcasting organizations and free producers.

The aim of the Festival is to affirm different approaches in the presentation of old literary texts to a contemporary listener. The Festival is therefore open to all kinds of programs regardless of formal genre restrictions. In 2001 the contest was divided into two categories: drama and documentary.
